Welcome to the restaurant L’Ancienne École
in Palau-del-Vidre

Come and discover seasonal, homemade cuisine made with fresh, local produce, in a venue steeped in history.

For over 150 years, L'Ancienne École has been part of the heritage of Palau-del-Vidre, in the heart of the Pyrénées-Orientales, between Perpignan and the Côte Vermeille. Housed in a former village school built in 1868, our restaurant welcomes you to a place where history, authenticity and gastronomy come together naturally.

Since 2001, Baptiste and Émilie Gaillard have carried on the restaurant's philosophy: offering seasonal French cuisine, entirely homemade, prepared with fresh ingredients carefully selected from local producers.

Awarded the prestigious "Maître Restaurateur" title, L'Ancienne École showcases the richness of the region through a menu inspired by the seasons and local producers.

In the dining room, our team ensures you receive a warm and attentive welcome, in an authentic setting that blends exposed stone walls, a terrace, and a treed patio. Every meal is an invitation to share, relax and enjoy authentic French cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing our passion for French cuisine.

Tasty lunch, but… An enticing à la carte menu offering a wide choice of starters, main courses and desserts, all delicious and artfully presented, sure to satisfy palates keen to discover unusual, novel and original flavours, with portions sufficient to satisfy most «normal» appetites and fairly good value for money, although a little on the pricey side. The service is cheerful, friendly and efficient, without being stiff or stuffy. However… there were repeated failings in taking a genuine gluten allergy (coeliac disease) into account, despite this having been mentioned at the time of booking and confirmed by the waitress when the order was taken: no gluten-free bread was provided; appetisers served with the pre-dinner drinks, including a garlicky cheese mousse that could not be spread on the gluten-containing toast; an exquisite starter of marinated watermelon and courgette cannelloni, but topped with a small biscuit containing gluten, which had to be turned over to have this garnish removed; roasted sea bream fillets (excellent, cooked to perfection) served with samosas, which had to be sent back to the kitchen and were replaced upon their return by a quenelle of the samosa filling; a pastry on a biscuit base made with wheat flour, served with iced tea with poached peach (which, incidentally, was not particularly appreciated by another diner), which had, however, been advertised as gluten-free when the order was taken and which, after being sent back and forth to the kitchen, turned into a completely disorganised dessert: a large bowl of tea with a scoop of ice cream and a few pieces of fruit, which bore little resemblance to the dessert on the menu. It’s a real shame because this lunch – which was generally enjoyed by the other diners, both for the delicate flavours of the dishes and the aesthetic appeal of their presentation – was largely spoiled for our guest (who was celebrating her birthday), who was hampered by her allergy. What a shame… It is high time that most French restaurateurs, whose cuisine is above average, followed the example of the majority of their Spanish counterparts, who almost always offer gluten-free bread and prepare sauces, roux and so on in which gluten-free maize or rice flour is used instead of wheat flour, as well as certain desserts (crème brûlée, chocolate lava cake) reimagined using maize flour (not cornflour!)

Quelle superbe decouverte.

The must-see... Can't fault it, other than a big thank you to the team and the chef who, behind the scenes, delighted our taste buds with their summer menu.

Fine dining full of surprising flavours. You expect to be surprised when reading the menu, and that is the case from starter to dessert. You feel a great sense of gentleness and harmony in this place through its layout and decoration. The welcome and service are perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the restaurant.
